Dr. Amyn Sajoo will deliver the 2011 Augustana Lecture on Oct 20, "Law, Faith and Ethics: Narratives of Public Islam" at the University of Alberta (Camrose campus).

Abstract: Public religion is as insistently vital a phenomenon of our age as secularism. For Muslims, the domain of everyday ethics provides a rich canvas for the interplay of public and private, faith and modernity – while providing a critique of utilitarian choices that ordinarily mark the workings of law in public life.

Dr. Sajoo will also give a lecture at the Edmonton campus on Oct 21, titled, "But how is his reason?': The Ethical Tradition in Islam"

Abstract: The dance of reason and tradition has found particular expression in Muslim ethics in the idea of maslaha -- the public good, understood as a rational way of going beyond the letter of the law in pursuit of "ultimate" objectives. Moral reasoning, then, becomes a critical facet of faith in action.
